Public Lecture by Mark Frankel
New Buildings Institute
Friday, November 6, 2009, 8:00am to 5:00pm – Workshop/Charrette
The Net Zero Energy (NZE) Workshop will be instrumental in discussing potential design and management solutions needed to transform the University of Utah College of Architecture + Planning building into a NZE demonstration facility. While NZE (i.e., the energy demand required to operate the building is offset by renewable power generating systems located on and adjacent to the building) is gaining ground as sustainable design approach in new construction, few existing buildings have undergone assessment and evaluation to make them perform comparably to new NZE buildings.
The NZE Workshop will be a pre-programming and design oriented educational exercise with two educational objectives. First, the attendees will learn about a diverse range of architectural design and construction practices that are commonly used in sustainable new buildings. The second outcome is to have the attendees collectively discuss these practices and collaborate on the exploration of viable applications that pertain directly to the adaptation of the building to achieve the NZE goals of the College of Architecture + Planning. The issues to be discussed include energy conservation, power generation, building operations and management, resource management, funding models, and education outreach.
By completing the workshops, the attendees will not only have been introduced to the NZE concepts that can be applied to new and existing buildings but also will have had the opportunity to further discuss their actual viability for use in existing buildings with their peer professionals. It is expected that each outcome will contribute to their future design approach to rehabilitating existing buildings and designing new buildings.

“The Path to Net Zero”
Mark Frankel will explore the issues and challenges of renovating late 20th Century buildings into
zero-energy facilities. Mark will particularly emphasize the College of Architecture + Planning’s
existing facility in its context on the University of Utah campus and the implications such a
renovation could have for institutional buildings everywhere.
